I’ve always been into funky looking surfboards. My quiver is a revolving collection of single fins, twin fins, eggs, bonzers, fish and disks.
I’d been thinking about shaping a board for myself but never liked the idea of using foam. That’s when I decided to have a go at building a hollow wooden surfboard… it flew… and now my quiver has doubled and half of it is wood.
My boards have received a bit of attention in the car park and in the water at Bondi, and requests started coming in. So now I’m doing custom boards, you can see one on display at the Six Ounce Board Store in Bondi.
The boards are super strong and will last you years, not a season or two, and if down the track your board is looking well-loved, you can sand it back and apply a new coat of 2pac and it’ll look new again (you can’t say the same for a foam board).
They’re a bit heavier than your average surfboard, but when
they’re
in
the water they feel lively and very fast in trim.
They also absorb the
bumps on the choppy days.
